The School of
Physical, Chemical and Applied Sciences consists of the following
three departments.
- Department of Physics
- Department of
Chemistry
- Department of Earth Sciences.
The Department of
Physics offers 2-year M.Sc, 5-year integrated M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D
programs. The Department has distinguished faculty members with
excellent laboratory and computational facilities. The faculty
members of the Department have received major research project grants
for more than Rs. 4 crores from various funding agencies like DST,
AICTE, UGC, DRDO, DAE, INSA, CSIR, INCPAR and also received many
national and international awards. The faculty members have published
more than 400 research papers in internationally reputed journals.
A significant
number of students of this Department have qualified in the CSIR-UGC
NET / GATE examinations and pursue research or got placements in
leading scientific and software companies / institutions.
FACILITIES IN
PONDICHERRY UNIVERSITY

The University central
library has over 1.12 lakhs of books, over 7,100 journals and
excellent on-line journal referring facilities. Internet access is
provided by 2 MBPS radio link.
- The University is linked with
UGC-INFONET through VSAT and provides on-line access to about 5000
e-journals.

The Central
Instrumentation Facility has electronics shop, mechanical shop and
glass blowing shop to undertake any type of repair, and maintenance
of scientific instruments, in addition to the latest sophisticated
analytical instruments in spectroscopy, microscopy, magnetism and
virtual instrumentation systems.

Excellent hostel
facilities are available for both men and women.
- A health center
functions for the benefit of students and staff.
- An ambulance is
also available.
- Two canteens, a post office and Indian bank operates
within the campus.
UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF
EDUCATION

The Pondicherry
University follows CBCS (choice-based credit system). Under this
system, the students have a good deal of freedom in designing their
own curriculum to suit their needs. Each program will have a set of
courses that a student must complete to get the degree. These are
called hardcore courses. The students can take any soft-core course
offered in any department as long as they fulfill the certain
prerequisites. The students can also take as many courses as they
can handle subject to a maximum of 30 credits in any semester.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
to STUDENTS

All candidates who pass
the entrance examination of the Pondicherry University and admitted
to Ph.D (Physics) are eligible to receive a scholarship of Rs.
5,000/- per month and contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- per annum.
- All candidates who pass the entrance examination of the Pondicherry
University and admitted to M.Phil (Physics) are eligible to receive
a scholarship of Rs. 3,000/- per month.

The UGC-CSIR NET
qualified candidates are eligible to receive fellowships as per the
UGC-CSIR rules.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
A pass in B.Sc with Physics, Chemistry and
Mathematics with at least 55% of marks.

M.Phil (Physics) and
Ph.D (Physics)
A pass in M.Sc (Physics) with at least 55% of
marks.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
-
There will be a separate
admission test for M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D.
- All candidates seeking
admission to M.Sc (Physics), M.Phil (Physics) and Ph.D (Physics) in
Pondicherry University campus should appear and qualify in the
entrance examination.
- The GATE and UGC-CSIR qualified candidates
need not write the University entrance examination for M.Phil /
Ph.D. However, they should apply for admission with their GATE /
CSIR certificate.
